About the Presenter Dr. Fair Vassoler is an Assistant Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. She also has a secondary appointment in the Neuroscience Department in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She received a Master’s in Pharmacology and Biomedical Neuroscience from Boston University School of Medicine and her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed additional post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania and Tufts University. Dr. Vassoler teaches veterinary neurobiology and pharmacology in the veterinary and graduate curriculum at the Cummings School. She has an active research program with a primary focus on addiction and substance use disorders. Current research projects include transgenerational epigenetic effects and mechanisms of transfer of parental opioid exposure, epigenetic modifications in response to opioids, and the development of novel therapeutic modalities to treat refractory relapsing addiction. She utilizes state of the art molecular and cellular techniques in combination with animal models to address these questions. Additionally, her interests include both education and community outreach. In that capacity, she is involved in the Boston Area Neuroscience Group (BANG), which provides community education and outreach opportunities as well as volunteer work in underserved communities as a classroom neuroscience guest to promote STEM.

There has been much research in the last few years highlighting the importance of the age at which we neuter dogs, but the timing of that in relation to the oestrus cycle of the bitch has received far less attention. Unfortunately, if spayed at the wrong point in their cycle bitches can enter a state of ‘persistent phantom pregnancy’ and, unlike a ‘normal’ phantom pregnancy, this one does not go away on its own and can lead to intractable and unpredictable anxiety or aggression. In this webinar, Sara will explain the current state of knowledge of how both ‘normal’ and ‘persistent’ phantom pregnancies arise, the behaviour changes they can cause, their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. You’ll also find out why she considers phantom pregnancy ‘the silent killer…’

Dr. Cook is an International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, a longstanding professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), and was one of the first trainers nationally to become a Certified Professional Dog Trainer through independent evaluation. Dr. Cook received her Ph.D. in Psychology from UC Berkeley, with her research focusing on the dog-human relationship and its effect on the problem solving strategies dogs employ. Conventional training protocols stifle the dog’s natural predatory behaviours through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against the dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt!

About the Presenter

Dr. Spaulding has been in the dog training and behavior profession since 1999. She has a PhD in biopsychology—the study of the biological basis of behavior—and is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist through the Animal Behavior Society. She is particularly interested in stress, neurobiology, cognition, emotion, and wellbeing and how to apply these concepts to the prevention and early intervention of behavior problems in dogs. In addition to working with behavior clients, Dr. Spaulding teaches a variety of online courses and webinars on the science of behavior through her website, www.smartdogtrainingandbehavior.com.

In 2019, Dr. Spaulding received the Association of Professional Dog Trainer’s (APDT’s) Member of the Year Award. She serves on the APDT Education Committee, the IAABC Foundation Board, the Fear Free Advisory group, and the Quality of Care task force facilitated by Fear Free. Before opening Smart Dog, Dr. Spaulding earned her B.S. in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. In college, she worked for the local humane society for several years. Karen Wild, Dip App Psych, CCAB is an ASAB-Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist with over 20 years experience. She runs a full time behaviour practice ‘Pawprint Pets’ near Peterborough, UK, working with family dogs and cats on Veterinary referral. Karen specialises in puppy development and resource-guarding issues.

Karen is a member of the Fellow of Animal Behaviour Clinicians (FABC), a Full Member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) and an Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) Registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist and Animal Training Instructor (ABTC-ATI). She is a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society (MBPsS).

She has authored five books ‘What your Dog Wants’, ’21 Days to the Perfect Dog’ and ‘Being a Dog’ (Hamlyn) and co-authored two with TV Vet Emma Milne. Her goal is to communicate welfare and training issues to the wider dog-owning public. Tom Candy is a Senior Training and Behaviour Advisor for DogsTrust in the United Kingdom. Tom is responsible for overseeing the training and behaviour at multiple rehoming centres across the UK. His duties include assessment, management and behaviour modification.

A passion for animal welfare and training led Tom to undertake a BSc (Hons) in bio-veterinary science, and an MSc in clinical animal behaviour from the University of Lincoln, UK.

Having started volunteering in rescue at the age of 15, Tom has been involved in a variety of aspects of rescue, including fundraising, home checks, transporting, and general day-to-day activities. Since graduating from University, Tom has been working as a training and behaviour advisor at a DogsTrust, locuming across 7 centres before moving to the senior training and behaviour team.

About the presenter

Nick Thompson is a vet. He has been fighting for responsible, species-appropriate raw food feeding for pets for over 25 years. His tireless drive for healthy pets from birth to graceful old age brought him to raw feeding in the mid-1990s.

Nick is Founding President of the international Raw Feeding Veterinary Society (www.rfvs.info) and has co-authored a pioneering worldwide survey of 79 vets and their experiences feeding raw food. He has co-organised international raw food conferences for the RFVS since 2012.

In 1999, Nick established his specialist practice, Holisticvet (www.holisticvet.co.uk). Now based in Corsham, near Bath, he offers homeopathy, natural nutrition and herbal medicine and a lot of good old-fashioned common sense for dogs and horses.

His pet topics are gastroenterology and the microbiome and the misuse of pharmaceuticals in medicine. He loves researching all aspects of human and animal nutrition. Nick is a regular contributor to YouTube discussions on raw feeding and blogs to forward the raw feeding cause.

Nick also shares his passion for raw feeding with a nutritional consultancy service to the premier raw pet food companies in the UK and Europe. Lisa Gorenflo gained her certification as a Mantrailing Instructor for Mantrailing International over the past 5 years and is the only instructor to hold this qualification in the UK. She qualified her own dog under the British Mantrailing Academy and was also awarded the Skills for Justice certificate.

Mantrailing UK is the only Mantrailing training centre in the UK certified by Mantrailing International.

Lisa has a background in the IGP and THS sport. She has worked with dogs all over the world, including rescue centres in Germany and the US, rehabilitating and training dogs for a better life.

Her training is based on the Kocher Method, but she tailors all of her training to work for each individual dog handler team. Her goal is for each team to find their way together.

Lisa has brought the Mantrailing sport over to the UK 5 years ago.

Mantrailing UK has 55 certified instructors in the UK as well as Guernsey and they will also expand their instructor network to Canada and Poland in 2021.
