Ethological Contributions to “Behavior Problems” in Dogs – Kim Brophey

Ethically and effectively working cases as a canine behavior professional requires us to perform both
initial and ongoing comprehensive analysis of all contributing elements to a dog’s behaviour. In this webinar, participants
are introduced to Kim Brophey’s widely celebrated and endorsed L.E.G.S.® system of Applied
Ethology as a simple and practical framework for doing so – bridging multiple scientific disciplines and
delivering new depths of understanding by organizing the critical components of all animal behaviour.
Learn how to identify, understand, and integrate the full scope of potential factors influencing behaviour
Learned, Environmental, Genetic, and unique internal conditions of the individual animal’s own Self –
in order to prevent misunderstandings and incorrect assessment of cases, obstacles to the progress of
behavior modification, inadequate safety and management provisions, and even life-threatening
circumstances for both animals and people.

Phantom Pregnancy: the silent killer…

Phantom Pregnancy: the silent killer… Webinar

Presented by Dr Sara Davies MRCVS

(Free for ICB members)

About the Webinar

There has been much research in the last few years highlighting the importance of the age at which we neuter dogs, but the timing of that in relation to the oestrus cycle of the bitch has received far less attention. Unfortunately, if spayed at the wrong point in their cycle bitches can enter a state of ‘persistent phantom pregnancy’ and, unlike a ‘normal’ phantom pregnancy, this one does not go away on its own and can lead to intractable and unpredictable anxiety or aggression. In this webinar, Sara will explain the current state of knowledge of how both ‘normal’ and ‘persistent’ phantom pregnancies arise, the behaviour changes they can cause, their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. You’ll also find out why she considers phantom pregnancy ‘the silent killer…’

Social interactions between dogs and humans

Social interactions between dogs and humans

Presented By Dr Amy Cook

Recording

Cost £15.00

About the Webinar

We spend a lot of time improving our communication in training, but do we spend enough time improving our social communication? Too often we have the dogs doing the “heavy lifting” in the conversation, where we focus on teaching them how to respond to us, and so often miss their subtle signals and preferences about our social relationship! We’d be so much more effective as partners if our daily social interactions with dogs were in line with how they communicate, and demonstrated respect for their answers. In this presentation, we discuss how to be a good, sensitive listener, how to leave room for a dog’s opinions, and to avoid the common human mistakes of repetition, pressure, too much touch, and monologuing!

Harness your Hunter through Predation Substitute Training

Presented by Simone Mueller

Webinar Recording Cost £15.00

About the Webinar

Harness your Hunter through Predation Substitute Training

Conventional training protocols stifle the dog’s natural predatory behaviours through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against the dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt!

Predation is an inner need that makes our dogs happy. Suppressing those natural urges is like putting a lid on a boiling pot. Eventually, that pressure needs to escape, and without a proper outlet, it’s probably going to get messy.

Predation Substitute Training (PST) is a motivation-based and need-oriented training program, designed to stop uncontrolled predatory chasing and to provide safe outlets for our dog’s natural drive.

Instead of making discipline the nagging factor that spoils the fun, this training system will help dogs and their guardians to grow as a team and go hunting together!

In this presentation we are going to discuss:

  • What is predation?
  • Why do our dogs love to hunt?
  • Why is predatory behaviour so hard to interrupt?
  • How to structure walks to set our dogs up for success
  • Tools to help the dog to control their urge to chase in a healthy way.
  • Games to express predatory energy in a safe, controlled environment

Beyond socialisation! A newer approach towards earliest intervention.

Presented by Karen Wild

Webinar Recording Cost £15.00

(Recording is free for ICB members)

About this webinar

There is evidence that behavioural advice when given to puppy owners, results in fewer problem behaviours such as mouthing of people, inappropriate toileting, mounting and more importantly from a wider social perspective, aggressive behaviours towards unfamiliar dogs and people.

– Is it enough to just tell an owner to socialise’ their puppy?
– Can we deliver a better set of tools to accompany this?
– Who can intervene with other learning, and how?
-What key advice needs to be given to prevent later behavioural problems?
– Specific training that assists with this puppy early learning, specifically with emotional learning.
-Why this is important for any puppy?
– How this approach fits into the pet care community especially with owners, and as early as possible
-Can we standardise practice advice, ideally in consultation with experienced trainers and behaviour professionals?
